I think strong emotions are more accepted by society when they are expressed within the four walls of a canvas and hung above the couch.

Artist Bio

Lis Gerber is an abstract painter and writer whose work explores emotion through texture, gesture, and the natural world. Following a nearly twenty-five-year career in creative direction, during which she developed visual identities and brand narratives for internationally recognized companies, she returned more fully to her fine art practice during the pandemic. Painting became an essential means of examining experiences and emotions that resist verbal explanation.

Her work draws from the material language of nature and the poetry of weathered surfaces, including bark, ash, stone, smoke, moss, and shifting light. Nature speaks to her in a language she understands. She is especially drawn to elements that are fading, imperfect, or melancholic, finding beauty in their honesty and impermanence.

Working intuitively, Gerber builds, obscures, and removes layers until each surface feels emotionally resolved rather than visually perfected. Through abstraction, her paintings consider vulnerability, transformation, memory, and the passage of time.
